Project Description:

When a sinkhole starts forming in your backyard, it's rarely just a landscaping problem. For this homeowner on the south side of Lafayette, Louisiana — just minutes from Moncus Park and the well-known Legends Lounge — it was the sign of something bigger: a collapsed main sewer line and 76-year-old cast iron pipes that had finally reached the end of the road.

The warning signs had been building for a long time. The homeowner was dealing with ongoing drain problems and had a visible sinkhole forming about 25 feet from the house. That's a classic symptom of a failed main line — when the pipe collapses underground, the surrounding soil slowly washes into the void, creating that sinking depression at the surface. In this case, the main line had collapsed decades ago, and the home's original cast iron system had been deteriorating ever since.

Cast iron was the standard in Lafayette for decades. Even after PVC was approved for residential plumbing here in the 1970s, many local plumbers kept installing cast iron simply because it was what they knew. The problem is that cast iron rusts and corrodes from the inside out, which leads to rough interior walls, frequent clogs, and exactly the kind of recurring drainage issues this homeowner was experiencing.
Rather than patch a system that was only going to keep failing, the customer made the smart long-term decision to replace everything with PVC. PVC is immune to rust, and as long as it stays underground it can essentially last a lifetime. Its smooth interior also means water and waste flow through far more easily — no more buildup catching on corroded metal.

For this whole-home repipe, our crew re-engineered the drainage layout for better performance. We abandoned the old cast iron running under the house for the kitchen and washer and rerouted those lines outside, while the bathroom, toilet, and shower drains were rerouted around the structure for cleaner, more accessible runs.

This was a big job, and we put nearly our entire team of eight expert plumbers on it to get it done quickly, efficiently, and up to the quality standards our customers count on. Because the property had a large oak tree with an extensive root system, we brought in the heavy equipment — including a CAT excavator to dig through the soil and roots, and a packer (jumping jack compactor) to firmly re-compact the ground once the new pipes were buried. Proper compaction protects the new lines, prevents future sinking, and keeps the yard stable for years to come.
